Today is an exciting milestone for us. We just released Cog 1.0 after a year and a half of development, many alpha and beta releases, and lots of engagement with the community.

We had three main goals in mind when we began developing Cog. First, we wanted to remove the security blockers that prevented organizations from adopting ChatOps. Second, we wanted to make it easier to extend ChatOps using whatever tools you like. Finally, we wanted to allow much more powerful interactions to make ChatOps feel more like a Unix shell so you’d have fewer reasons to work in a less collaborative way.

With the release of Cog 1.0, we’ve accomplished these things (and more!) and we’re very happy to share it with you all. As always, Cog is released under the open source Apache License. ChatOps adoption is very clearly on the rise and organizations that adopt this way of working are seeing incredible results and we believe Cog will accelerate that growth.

Today is also a bittersweet moment for us too, though. Despite the growth of ChatOps, we were unable to demonstrate enough sales traction in time to raise additional capital in the current funding environment. I’m sad to report that we’ve made the decision to wind down operations at Operable.

The entire Operable team is grateful to the community for all of your support and excitement over the last year since our first public Cog release. Even though Operable is no longer funding Cog development, some of our team members will continue to be involved in the open source project as their time permits.

On a personal level, Kevin and I would like to thank the Operable team for their incredible dedication and hard work. While this is not the outcome any of us hoped for, we are honored to have had the opportunity to work with such a talented group.

We’d also like to thank our families, True Ventures, our angel investors, friends, and advisors who have been nothing but supportive and encouraging since the day we began Operable. Your support through the ups and downs of an early stage startup has been appreciated more than you know.

We look forward to work as a community to make Cog even better. If you’d like to get involved, please join us on GitHub.
